Thirteenth not unlucky for Horspole

editorial image

Sidecar driver Gary Horspole rode to a brace of 13th places in the final two races of the championship at Brands Hatch on Saturday.

It meant that Horspole, from Leasingham, completed his season in 11th place overall in the 2012 Eastern Airways British Sidecar Championships.

Phil Hyde from Leicester stepped in to partner Horspole after regular passenger Rob Biggs left the team and the pair immediately gelled, posting some fast lap times during free practice and qualifying to begin the penultimate race from a seventh row grid position.

But in the scramble to get round Druids hairpin on the first lap another rider clipped his wheel sending Horspole spinning off the track. He recovered to return to action but by this time was some seven seconds adrift at the back of the field.

He fought back to catch the back markers and moved up into a point scoring position. He continued to make progress throughout the 10 lap affair and crossed the finish line in 13th place.

In the final race of the season Horspole again began from the seventh row and got away to a good start.

But as he began to move forward the race was red flagged when another competitor crashed on lap seven and a result declared with Horspole finishing once again 13th.

With double points being allocated in the final two races, Horspole picked up a further 12 points to take his total to 93 for 11th place in the overall rider standings.
