World championship disappointment for Horspole

LEASINGHAM sidecar racer Gary Horspole, with Robert Biggs in the chair, took on the world when they were invited to race as wild card entries in the FIM World Sidecar championship round at Sachsenring in Germany.

Things didn’t quite go to plan, as Horspole encountered an engine problem during practice and ended the wet session down in 19th place. But he had to learn his way around an unfamiliar circuit and was riding with a grid full of world class riders.

Qualifying went much better for the Lincolnshire ace and he set a good lap time to start the race from 15th place.

Gary said: “We could have gone a little faster during qualifying but for the engine problems. We needed to work on that prior to the race.”

But just two laps into his first world championship race a warning light came on and Horspole decided to pull in to the pits and retire to save further damage to the engine.

“It was disappointing not to be able to complete the race,” he said. “But we had a British round to contest two weeks later and needed to have the outfit on top form for that.

“It was a fantastic experience for us in Germany. We would like another attempt at world level and hopefully finish the race!”

The next outing for the pair will be at Brands Hatch in Kent for round five of the Eastern Airways British F1 Sidecar championship this weekend.

Free practice is on Friday at 9.30am, followed by qualifying at 1pm. The first of the two races is set for 4.50pm on Friday and the second outing will be on Sunday afternoon at 5.20pm.
