Cup tie decided in opening quarter
Newark Under-17s 19
Sleaford Under-17s 22
A scintillating opening 15 minute spell on Wednesday saw Sleaford Under 17s set up a deserved victory against Newark in the first round of the NLD Cup.
Played away under lights against opposition who had progressed through to the finals in the previous four years, it was a very encouraging start to the season for Sleaford.
The Sleaford forwards controlled the first quarter of the match, allowing their pacey backs to capitalise.
Rhys Thomson followed up his own kick to beat a defender and go over for the opening try. In quick succession both Peter Rowlands and Ian Bishop then collected the ball near the half way line and out-sprinted the opposition to touch down for two more scores.
Sleaford continued to press and Craig Anderson drove over from close range to make it 22-0 up with barely 15 minutes of the match gone.
Newark worked hard to get back into the game and were rewarded with a try just before half time.
The second half was a very different affair and Newark quickly crossed for their second try. With Sleaford conceding penalties at an alarming rate, a third try brought the difference to just three points.
However, the Red and Blacks soaked up the pressure to run out victors.
