Under 13s avenge earlier loss with powerhouse display

Sleaford RFC Under-13s 24

Nottingham BC Under-13s 10

IN their latest success, Sleaford Under-13s comprehensively dismantled of one of the strongest teams in the East Midlands.

The Nottingham side have had a very successful season so far and defeated Sleaford by a single try earlier in the season.

However, on this occasion they met a Sleaford side that has developed considerably since then.

From the start, Sleaford were aggressive and took the game to Nottingham, never allowing their forwards to dominate the game.

Sleaford drove low and hard at the rucks and recycled quick ball, which they threw wide at every opportunity.

The first try came from Sleaford captain and centre Ben Taylor, who scored under the posts for Nathan Carter to convert.

A second score came from quick ruck ball out to the right wing, setting up Will Brewer, who shrugged off a couple of tacklers before going over the try line.

Sleaford’s third try was a copycat of the first, with Ben Taylor again breaking tackles before touching down under the posts.

Nottingham responded with a well-worked try of their own against the run of play. In the second half Sleaford scored only once through Mason Coulam, who charged through the middle for an unconverted try.

This half was much more attritional than the first but any Nottingham threats were too far out to be of any real concern to Sleaford.

Will Brewer, with a little more experience, might have scored twice more, but was stopped short on each occasion.

Nottingham scored a consolation try right at the end of the match but it was too little too late.

Sleaford full back James Stringer won the man of the match award with his outstanding tackling and attacking running.

Ben Jones also merits mention, for showing enormous courage as the smallest player on the field taking on the biggest player in a one to one head on charge – the outcome was predictable but his courage was an example to all present.

Both Nottingham and Sleaford have reached the semi-finals of the Notts, Lincs & Derbys Cup. Sleaford play Spalding and Nottingham play Melbourne. So these teams may meet again in the final if all goes well for them both.

Sleaford RFC U13 squad: Cody Doherty, Dan Jones, Nathan Carter, Harry Atkinson, Lewis Himsworth, Josh Yeomans, Mason Coulam, Lewis Stephenson, Ben Jones, Sam Jewers, Eddie Schwarz, Myles Bero, Joel Sloan, Joe Jones, James Corbett, Tommy Williams, Ben Taylor (captain) Harry Wright, Sam Bell, Will Brewer, James Stringer, John Dechamp
