Weakened Sleaford side hold on for eighth win in a row

Mellish Under 15s 22

Sleaford Under 15s 24

On Sunday Sleaford Rugby Club Under 15s travelled 40 miles to Mellish on a cold crisp day.

The side hadn’t realised how much the previous week’s game with Peterborough had eaten into their squad and with injuries and prior commitments they could only muster 14 players from a squad of 26.

Sleaford were without both front row props so had to play non contested scrums and had the unenviable task of playing the entire game with 14 men against a full team of 15 from Mellish.

Despite this disadvantage, Sleaford’s aggressive and well organised playing style kept them in the contest.

They never allowed Mellish to get the upper hand and at every ruck or maul each of the Sleaford players provided that little bit extra to make up for numbers. Because of this Mellish had to commit more players which, on occasions, left their back line exposed and provided Sleaford with overlap opportunities.

First half tries by Connor Todd and Kieran Wakelin, with a conversion by Charlie Simmons, saw the sides go in at half time all square at 12-12.

The second half followed a similar pattern to the first. Sleaford again dug deep, with the forwards continuing to be aggressive in the rucks and mauls and open play and the backs continually up on the Mellish back line, ensuring the ball very rarely made it passed their centres.

Sleaford added further tries through Byron Slyfield and Bradley Roberts and a conversion by replacement kicker Sam Cheek.

The final six minutes seemed to last forever. In fact, with added time, it lasted for 14 minutes, but finally the referee blew for full time with Sleaford coming away worthy winners, 24-22. to chalk up their eighth win in a row.

Sleaford U15: Harry Barr, Glyn Bates, Elliot Bero, Sam Cheek(capt), Tom Kendall, Luke Miller, Bradley Roberts, Joseph Shaw, Charlie Simmons, Byron Slyfield, Matthew Stainsby, Connor Todd, Kieran Wakelin, Alec Williamson
