Sporting duo shine at leadership camp

TWO young leaders from Sleaford recently represented the Lincolnshire Central School Sport Partnership at one of the UK's largest youth volunteering and leadership camps.

The Step into Sport event was held at Loughborough University and attended by 400 16-19 year olds.

Organised by the Youth Sport Trust and supported by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, Sport England and Sports Leaders UK, it gave the students the skills and experience they need to sustain a lifelong involvement in leadership and volunteering in sport.

The camp was opened and closed by Dame Kelly Holmes and Hope Powell, England women's football coach.

Sam Mason, from Carre's Grammar School, and Lucy Nelstrop, from Kesteven and Sleaford High School, so impressed staff running the event that they have both been selected as part of a group of only 14 students invited to return as mentors at next year's event.

Lucy has also been asked to be one of a group of four travelling to America in October to share their experiences with students in Maine.

Mrs B Hood, head of physical education at the High School, said: "Over the years, Lucy has shown genuine commitment and dedication to her sport and particularly in her role as a community sports leader.

"We are extremely proud of her achievements and that they have been recognised with this opportunity."

Partnership development manager Andy Allen said: "Sam is an exceptionally talented sportsman and has represented the school in a variety of sports, particularly excelling in golf. However, he has clearly shown a commitment and a natural ability to support others and help them to enjoy sport.

"Both Sam and Lucy are part of the leadership academy which is delivered through Lincolnshire Central School Sport Partnership."
