Striders show their steam power in Racing the Train

FOURTEEN members of the Sleaford Striders club made the long trip to Tyfyn in North Wales for the annual Race the Train event.

The event comprised several races of different lengths up and down the hills in an attempt to beat the steam train. All the courses featured steep climbs and equally steep downhill sections and involved running through streams and along muddy paths.

Joe Hanks was the first Strider to finish the junior race in just 25mins 12secs. Helena Hird (25.26) was next, followed by her sister Megan (26.24). Maria Hird (28.25) completed the Strider contingent in this race and they all beat the train.

Tom Hanks was the only Strider in the five-mile race and he beat the train with a time of 41.40.

In the 10k event, John Hird, who had only driven back from the south of France the day before, was the first Strider home in a good time of 61.11.

Clive Holden was next in 64.49, with Julie Hanks, returning to the event for the second year completing the race in 74.15. Michelle Hird, who has been running for just a year, rose to the challenge and crossed the line in 77.12.

The 14-mile race took place in the afternoon and Sandy Teffler beat the train with a time of 1.46.13. Andy Preston was the second Strider to cross the line in 1.54.01.

Others running in this race were: Ian Hanks (1.58.13); Alan Buckberry (2.09.23); Emma Marshall Tefler (2.13.18); Ted Preston (2.17.02); Leanne Ward (2.50.18).
