Super Sarah cycles her way podium place in nationals

MULTI-TASKING cycling champion Sarah King has managed to juggle studying for her A-Levels with cycling at national level.

The seventeen-year-old from Evedon took part in the Junior National Road Championships on June 13 and finished third in her age group and even managed to finish 11th out of the women overall.

The Junior National Championships took place on a tough course in Lancashire, with several hills to climb on every lap.

Sarah said: "We did six laps of the course, which came to a total of about 50 miles altogether, and it only took us two and a half hours.

"Usually I like hilly courses but this was definitely painful.

"I really didn't expect to get third place. At the finish I really had to put everything I had left into it to get past a couple of the other juniors before the finish."

Recently Sarah was awarded the Junior Sportsperson of the Year (Girls) trophy at the Sleaford Standard Sports Awards for her achievements in cycling. during 2009. She was unable to attend the awards evening because of her cycling commitments but has since had the trophy presented to her.

This is her second year of racing but her first year of competing as a junior (competitors aged under 18), having previously competed at youth level (competitors aged under 16). She said: "It is a huge step up for cyclists."

Sarah currently trains for over 12 hours a week but says the main bulk of training is done over the winter in preparation for the racing season.

She added: "At the moment I'm racing almost every weekend all over the country and getting all my AS levels done at the same time, so it's a bit busy.

"My goals are to keep learning as much as possible every time I race and, ultimately, to represent Great Britain in road racing events.

"I'm also hoping to get to Belgium over the next few weeks for some completely different racing."
