Swift's flying high after England call

A local teenager has been called up to the UK under 16's polocrosse squad and will be travelling to Australia in July to represent his country.

Jonathan Swift of South View Riding School, Silk Willoughby, has been selected for the under-16s having recently Jonathan been called up to represent England's adult squad in Cork, where England took on Wales and hosts Ireland in a tri-nations tournament.

For many people, the sport polocrosse will be unknown to them. The sport is a combination of polo and lacrosse, where the aim of the game is to throw a ball between goal posts while on horseback. The game is considerably more popular in Australia than in the UK.

Although having to contend with a hectic exam period in recent weeks, Jonathan has been playing the sport every weekend.

He returned from senior international duty in Ireland with a runners-up medal and his mother Liz Swift said: "It's an honour for him to represent the men's side at national level."

He is now very much looking forward to his trip Down Under.

Jonathan said: "It's pretty amazing to be going out to Australia and a real privilege too.

"I travel on July 20 and come back on August 24. When we are out there we will play in tournaments for the first three weeks and then play Australia during the last two weekends."

The idea of playing lacrosse on horse back would be a daunting prospect for even the most hardened of sportsmen, but Jonathon took to the sport like a duck to water.

He said: "As soon as I was taught, I kept practising and it just felt natural when I started to play."
