Town disappointing on keeper Scott's big day
Sleaford Town 0 Daventry United 2 KEEPER Andrew Scott was given the honour of leading the Town side for Saturday's United Counties League Premier Division game as a tribute to mark his 400th first team appearance for the club
It was a champagne occasion but, sadly for Town, it wasn't a champagne performance from Sleaford, who are still struggling to find their form in the New Year.
Going into this game against opposition only a few places above them in the table Town would have been hoping to have been competitive enough to take all three points to consolidate their mid-table position.
True they had a slight edge in the first half, without creating too many chances, but at no time during the game did they ever get into top gear.
Jamie McCormack was unlucky when he beat the keeper for his shot to hit the post. Prior to that Miles Hunter, who in the second half of the season has yet to recapture his outstanding form of first three months of the campaign, saw his angled shot well saved.
Other than that, a Walters' shot over the angle was all Town had to show for their efforts in the opening period.
At the other end Scott dealt comfortably with a close range header and then, towards the end of the half, did well to save from the dangerous Joel Young, the Daventry left winger Man of the match Young slipped easily past Tom Ward but couldn't beat the defiant Scott.
It remained goal-less at the end of the first 45 minutes. But, after the break, Daventry were gifted the opener. Simon Bolland, alone in midfield and facing his own goal, seemed unaware of the time and space he had and directed a pass back to where he thought right back Tom Ward would be.
However, the full back had already moved forward up the wing and instead Bolland inadvertently played the perf ect ball for Young to latch onto and the wing man accepted the gift without hesitation to make it 1-0.
Town never really recovered from this setback. They still had more of the play, with Daventry reliant on breaks, but never created enough of a threat in front of goal.
For once, Town's deadly strike duo of Hunter and Oliver were snubbed out by an experienced Daventry back line, at the heart of which was a central defender who even won the aerial battle with Oliver, something which hasn't happened too often this season.
In the second half, manager Brian Rowland brought on Shaw to replace Bolland, whose confidence seemed to sap after his mistake, and Clark for Brothwell and Spence for Oliver.
Ten minutes from the end a foul by Ward just outside the area gave Daventry a free kick in a dangerous position.
The ball was flighted towards the six-yard box and only partially cleared by the Town defence. Young, lying in wait on the edge of the box, struck the ball home for his second of the game to seal the win for the visitors.
