Art made with communities goes on display

A new exhibition has opened, showcasing artwork produced in collaboration with communities in and around Sleaford.

Artists Lyndall Phelps, Jonathan Turner, Kate Genever, Katie Smith and Hannah Nicklin created the pieces by working with people in Sleaford, Welbourn, Waddington, and North Hykeham, through so-called ‘residences’.

It marked the first stage of NK Arts Partnership’s Ridges and Furrows project, which aims to explore and celebrate the heritage of these four locations through a series of cultural events.

The exhibition is being held at the Café Gallery at the Natural World Centre at Whisby and runs until April 29.

A spokesman said: “The 2015 artist residencies bought together communities to develop ideas for new arts projects that could feed into a programme of events over the next two years. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to learn more about the project and see some of the outcomes from the 2015 residencies.”

Exhibits include pieces by Katie Smith and Kate Genever from their Sleaford-based residency. During their time in the town, the duo invited people to show their homemade/handmade objects and share the stories behind them.

Some of these objects were then photographed using the wet plate collodion technique – one of the oldest types of photographic processes.
