A mosaic project to welcome visitors to the new look Sleaford Leisure Centre using hundreds of volunteers is all but complete.
Interested volunteers have been busy each Friday over the summer assembling the specially designed mosaic by Scottish artist Alan Potter.
The project has been based in an empty shop in Bristol Arcade and has seen up to 400 people contribute laying tiny tiles on the design mapped out by Alan.
Marion Sander of Arts NK said: “The mosaic comes in two parts. The part inside the leisure centre has been done by Alan Potter in his studio and the other part leading from the river up to the doors has been a community piece.”
Alan kicked things off with a week’s residency before handing over to local mosaic artist Ann Willoughby from Canwick who guided novices in the techniques. Marion said so many local people can now say they had a hand in it and the core mosaic group may go on to make more mosaics with new members welcome.
Marion said: “It is a fantastic project, using the empty shop as a focus point and creating a great interest.”
The design evolves from the river with tadpoles and eels to frogs, dragonflies, fish, to a mermaid and finally a swimmer. The outdoor section was being installed this week.
Anyone who participated is invited to send in their photos of them in action to add to the dedicated facebook page.
