Motorists were being puzzled by the wording of a new traffic sign displayed in a Sleaford street in October 1965.
Those parking in Handley Street were confused as to which side of the road they were allowed to park according to new instruction signs. The new, circular international traffic signs had a diagonal line through them meaning ‘No Waiting’. Beneath one a plate read: “8am - 6pm on odd dates” meaning there was no parking on that side of the road between those hours on odd dates of the month. Attached to the other sign it said: “8am-6pm on even dates” meaning no parking on the other side of the road on even dates of the month.
Sleaford Urban Council stressed drivers must know their Highway Code to understand the signs - and remember what date it is.
