Local residents have reported hoax phone callers who have been claiming to be officials from Sleaford Town Council.
The matter has been reported to the police by the Town Council after receiving at least five calls on Thursday from residents saying they have had the bogus phone calls.
A council spokesman said: “People have been posting on Facebook too saying they have been receiving hoax calls by people with an Eastern European or American accent, saying they are from Sleaford Town Council asking about the accident they recently had or a member of their family had.
“People have asked for their number and been told it is witheld or in one case they were told they don’t have a phone number - even though they had just made the call.
“People are ringing our office to make us aware having seen through the hoax, but we are just concerned for more vulnerable people who might be taken in.”
A Lincolnshire Police spokesman said they were probably ‘fishing’ calls: “We are aware of it and are talking to the Town Council about what has happened. If anybody receives these calls, if possible get a phone number from the caller. Take note of as many details as you can and listen carefully for accents and background noise. Do not give away any personal information, then let us know on 101 quoting incident number 175 of February 19.”
