Approximately 14,000 North Kesteven households are being urged to own up to the District Council if they are receiving council tax discounts they are not entitled to, before the authority hunts them down.
North Kesteven District Council gives a 25 per cent council tax discount to more than 14,000 households where there is only one adult resident. This totalled more than £4.1million in the last financial year.
The council will be studying its databases to identify those still claiming when there is now more than one adult living at an address. People currently claiming the Single Person Discount will be sent a form to confirm or amend their circumstances. Failing to return this or providing misleading information will incur a £70 fine. Householders caught out could have a considerable amount of backdated council tax arrears to pay off.
Executive Board Councillor Stewart Ogden said this is a last chance to own up: “We know there are times where a household’s circumstances change and people forget to tell us.
“However, it is a statutory requirement for council tax payers to tell us within 21 days if they think they should no longer qualify.”
