Fund-raisers got into the spirit of things when they took part in the first Very Amazing Pink Ribbon Race from Caythorpe to Grantham at the weekend.
The race, in aid of Breast Cancer Now, the charity newly formed from the merger of Breast Cancer Campaign and Breakthrough Breast Cancer, started off at the village’s playing fields
MP for Sleaford and North Hykeham, Stephen Phillips, helped to start things off and was in for a bit of a surprise because he hadn’t been warned that as part of a selfie challenge participants needed to try and get a photo with him, preferably on a spacehopper.
The event started with a spacehopper bounce which proved more challenging than it looked but immense fun – so much so that after the participants had set off it proved rather difficult to persuade local children who were just enjoying the fun to give them back!
Weather for the day was perfect, and with essential clearance on footpaths along the route having been carried out, those who were walking were able to enjoy our beautiful countryside without being stung by nettles.
The event will have raised about £5,000 for Breast Cancer Now, which will go towards vital research in support of their aim that no one need die from this disease by 2050.
Charity representative Laurence Byrne went along to help local event organiser and fund-raiser Sue Stannard.
Laurence said: “We have been very pleased to see so much press coverage of this event and of our new name.
“Sue first put her ideas to us over a year ago, and we had never heard of anything like it, but I think the photographs demonstrate how much fun was had by all, and I understand that nearly everyone who participated, and a good number of people who didn’t, have already put in a request for a repeat in 2016.”
With participation by Sudbrook Moor Golf Club, Syston Park Fruit Farm, Chandlers Mitsubishi, Belton Garden Centre, Maidenhead Aquatics, Wyndham Park and Grantham Tennis Club, and support from businesses including The Red Lion, The Brownlow Arms, The Hare and Hounds, The Bell at Coleby, Moy Park, Equilibrium Gym at Grantham Tennis Club, Grantham Bowl and Grantham Fun Farm this truly was an excellent local effort.
