Metheringham Under 17s 4
Ruskington Lions Under 17s 9
Luke Gilbert netted four as Ruskington Lions enjoyed a successful visit to Metheringham.
In an eventful first half, Gilbert opened the scoring with a strike at the far post from a Jake Pointon corner.
Metheringham soon equalised as Aaron Stafford hit home, but Ruskington quickly restored their lead, with Gilbert netting his second goal of the first half before Metheringham again levelled through Lewis Kelly.
Ten minutes before half-time, Toby Petett netted his second goal of the season with a 25-yard drive up and over Metheringham goalkeeper Josh Siddens, sending Lions into half-time holding a 3-2 lead.
The floodgates opened after the interval as Petett managed to break through the Metheringham defence with a powerful run which allowed him to go on to bag his second of the game.
After a good period of play from Lions, Gilbert completed his first competitive hat-trick after a powerful shot flew straight past Siddens. The striker then went on to get Ruskington’s sixth in the 65th minute.
Ten minutes later Callum May scored his first goal of the season, tapping in after good work from Lewis Robson. Soon after May bagged a second.
There was a consolation goal for Metheringham, when winger Jacques Hill nipped in to snatch the ball from Ryan Goy’s weak back-pass to Lions’ keeper Jack Vine.
A tactical change by Lions allowed Charlie Russell a central midfield role, where he has been seen on a number of occasions this season. With just one minute left on the clock Petett swung a powerful corner towards the front post, where Russell managed to head home his second goal of the season and secure the victory for Ruskington to make amends for a disappointing 8-0 loss a fortnight ago.
