Carre’s just miss national golf glory

Sleaford Golf Club

TWO junior members of Sleaford Golf Club – Josh Taylor and Ollie Harrod – were in the Carre’s Grammar School golf team who shared second place in the National Schools Golf Championships at Woodhall Spa.

They represented Lincolshire schools as county champions. The third member of the team was Ryan MacLachan, who plays at Newark Golf Club.

n The men’s championship at Sleaford Golf Club was a very close affair, with England International James Burnett retaining his trophy by one shot from Kevin Blow. In the gross competition Jimmy Smith was second, with the minor places being taken by Oliver Harrod, Josh Taylor, Steve Lawson and Richard Burnett.

Kevin won the net prize and The Peake Medal, closely followed by Spencer Bowman, Will Hopkins, Martin Chambers, Dan Hare and Martin Orley.

n Despite the weather, the ladies’ section have completed their busy diary in the last two weeks.

The ladies’ championship was won in fine style by Helen Butterfield with a gross 151. Runner-up was Ann Lyon with gross 165.

On day one, Joan Carpenter won the best net with a 77, with Jill Lamming taking the gross prize with 86. On day two, Sally Lloyd with a net 72 was first, while Di Grocock won the gross prize with an 86..

Overall winner of the net prize was Sue Pick with a net 148.

The Ping Four-ball-better-ball was won by Di Grocock and Helen Paul with 38 points. They now progress to the regional finals.

The O’Hara Cup was won by Sue Pick with 36 points and the runner-up was Kay Beeton on 35.

In The Golf Foundation Charity Medal, some fine golf by Helen Butterfield saw her take first place with a net 69 off her handicap of 1. Runner-up was Sheila Wheeldon with a net 72 (96-24).

On Handicap Trophy Day, Jane Jones was the overall winner with a net 75, one clear of Rea Harkness in second place on 76. In the 1-25 handicap section Wendy Lawson took first place, while Sally Downey took the honours in the 26-36 section.

n The senior section continued their winning ways with a victory against Boston Golf Club by 4.5 to 3.5. Winning pairs were: Des Heyes and Frank Wykes, Mike Rushby and Peter Elliott, Mark Huskinson and Ken Coupland and Mal Hayler and Richard Higgs. Brian Cuthbert and Rob Lee secured the half necessary for the win.

n Sleaford’s B team continue to have mixed fortunes in the league, loosing to Burghley Park away by 3.5 matches to 2.2 but winning a home game against Greetham Valley 5.5 matches to 1.5

The C team defeated Boston West 5 matches to 1. Winning pairs were: Al Pearson and Barry Inman, John Webster and Alex Whitehall, Tony Cook and Bill Gault, Al Saunders and Mark Kierstan and Trev Kenyon and John Bateman.

n The July Stableford attracted 108 entries and was won by Darren Linfitt with 40 points on count-back from club captain Lee Morton.

In Division One, Chris Styles and Chris Campbell each scored 39, with Kev Blow and Steve Hamblin taking the minor places with scores of 38. In Division Two, second and third places were secured by Gary Walton and Spencer Bowman, who both scored 39.
