Double podium delight for Johnson at Isle of Man

FIREFIGHTER Ross Johnson scored two podium finishes at the Isle of Man Southern 100 races last week.

The Woodhall Spa racer also finished seventh in the Station Garage 125/400 event which was run over four laps of the 4.25-mile Billowen road circuit and fifth in the eight lap 600cc B race, despite being given a five second penalty for a jump start. Without the penalty he would have been fourth position.

But in his efforts to play catch up he recorded the fastest lap of the race of 2m 31.063s – 101.282mph.

Johnson’s first podium finish of the week was achieved in the Steam Packet Company 125/400cc race, run over six laps of the course on Thursday.

Riding the 400cc Kawasaki, Johnson enjoyed a competitive race mixing it with a group of riders all contesting third place. He posted his fastest lap of the race (2m 42.962s - 92.696mph) on his final circulation to snatch third place at the chequered flag, just half a second ahead of Dave Taylor.

The final race of the day was the six lap Senior Support Consolation event and, riding the 600cc Yamaha, Johnson was once more seen to mix it with a group of riders all contesting third place. Once again he posted his fastest lap of 2m 30.909s – 101.386mph - on the final lap to clinch third place taking the flag just 0.3s ahead of Peter Heymans and a mere two tenths of a second behind Dave Woolams, who finished in second place.

Ross said: “That last race was very close, I lost out on the straights but tried to make it up on the twisty bits.

“We enjoyed a good week of racing and to end the week with two podium finishes was fantastic.”

The next outing for Johnson will be a return to the Isle of Man for the Manx GP Festival, which takes place around the full 37.73-mile TT
course from August 18 to September 2.
