A Heckington teenager has his heart set on rugby stardom - having secured a regular place with premiership club Leicester Tiger’s junior side.
Fifteen-year-old James Martin made his eighth appearance last week for Leicester Tigers under 16s, beating Wasps 12-10 and setting up the winning try.
He has been with the famous club for one and a half years, as well as being one of the youngest ever regulars in Carre’s Grammar School’s first XV, alongside 18-year-olds, scoring a hat-trick for his school three weeks ago against Peterborough.
James also plays for Lincolnshire under 15s and used to play junior rugby with Sleaford before switching to Newark. He is also in the Notts, Lincs and Derbyshire under 16s team and the Midlands training squad.
The centre follows in the footsteps of his proud dad, Simon, who played for division one side Coventry in the 1990s. Simon said: “Leicester Tigers saw him and asked him to join their development programme.
“I used to help coach him but he doesn’t need any encouragement - he loves his rugby.”
They now wait to hear if he has been selected to join the full time academy another step towards becoming a professional player.
