Chesterfield Panthers 32 Sleaford 8
After the long festive break Sleaford Rugby Club Firsts team returned to action away from home taking on Chesterfield Panthers.
Conditions were awful with gale-force winds blowing down the pitch. Chesterfield chose to play into the wind after winning the toss.
Sleaford started the game well after three penalties were conceded by Panthers, but only one was successful giving the visitors a 3-0 lead.
Panthers began to settle into their game, Ward at scrum-half the first to touch down following a scrum. The conversion was missed.
Chesterfield continued to dominate possession. Panthers flanker Liam O’Neill then crashed over from close range. Again the conversion was missed.
Sleaford pinned Panthers back on their own try line and the no.9 was able to slip a tackle and touch down for the visitors.
With the wind and sun now behind Panthers, Sleaford conceded several penalties close to their line and Liam O’Neill crossed for his brace.
From the re-start Chesterfield again turned the screw leading to further penalties and Joe Walton was able to cross minutes later. Chesterfield then enjoyed total dominance in the scrum, Barnett scoring their fifth from five metres.
The backs undid Sleaford’s defence once again scoring Chesterfield’s sixth and final try and this time the conversion was made.
