Sleaford U15 57 - 5 Grimsby U15

This Sunday saw the welcome return of Grimsby to Sleaford. Last season’s encounters had produced two cracking, close fought, entertaining games with single score margins.

Sleaford had no reason to believe today’s encounter would be any different.

Taking the slope and the prevailing wind, Sleaford kicked off, Grimsby gathered, passed, fumbled and the pursuit began. A series of close quarter engagements followed, Grimsby on the retreat. Ball spills loose, was it a kick through or a heavy back heel? No-one was quite sure but the ball came to rest over the Grimsby try line and it was a Sleaford player first to the touch. Not the prettiest of tries but a great start.

The first half produced a sterling Sleaford effort, every breakdown contested, every scrum driven, line-outs collected, open play passing straight to hand and support runners everywhere. Grimsby just weren’t ready for what was being thrown at them.

Full credit, Grimsby kept trying to build attacks but Sleaford’s tackling and contesting at the breakdown was relentless. The Sleaford pack produced their best performance of the season so far, the back line revealing in the amount of possession provided. Wingers flying down touchlines on a regular basis. Tries followed in swift order.

Half time came and Sleaford looked strong 29 – 0 to the good.

A focussed half time talk was easy – keep doing what you’re doing.

A revitalised Grimsby came out strongly, more dedicated tackling and superior work at the break down by Sleaford neutralised every attack. The pack’s dominance rising, given the opportunity Grimsby started to select any option rather than a scrum for the restarts.

Slightly uphill and more into the wind, chip and chase wasn’t a real option this half, every ball would need to be run and it was. Players growing in confidence started trying to run through perhaps one too many tackles but the recycling continued and further tries produced.

Full credit to Grimsby they didn’t give up and were finally rewarded with a quick break try whilst Sleaford were still organising themselves.

Final score Sleaford 57 – 5 Grimsby.

Another solid performance which will need to be repeated next weekend going into round 2 of the NLD competition.
