A singer from Ruskington has just been nominated for a prestigious theatre industry award and is relying on your votes to lift the trophy.
Hugh Maynard, who first appeared on our screens as one member of the Tenors of Rock on X Factor, is currently starring as John Thomas in the West End musical ‘Miss Saigon’ - Cameron Mackintosh’s acclaimed new production showing at the Prince Edward Theatre.
It is the first time he has ever been nominated for an award and he says: “I am grateful for the nomination. But now that I see that I am in good standing. I would like to see if I can overcome the competition.”
Supporters can vote for him in the Best Featured Actor in a New Production of a Musical category in the Broadwayworld.com West End Awards. Just go to www.broadwayworld.com/westend/vote2014region.cfm and follow the steps.
Speaking about the production he said: “I am truly loving it and feel honoured to be a part of the legacy and family that is Miss Saigon.”
He previously performed the same role in the musical in 2004. Hugh spent his childhood in care in Birmingham and has done charity work with Action For Children. He felt it has helped him in performing the role in standing up for the Vietnamese street children.
Hugh has also played key roles in other West End shows, such as Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar, and Simba in The Lion King. But he adds: “At first, I always dreamt of being in a boyband.” Tenors of Rock have toured the UK, Europe and US and performed at the 2012 Olympic Games concert at Hyde Park. Hugh is releasing his own album of rock and soul covers too.
