Woodhall Spa

Gardeners’ association - Chairman Janice Fletcher welcomed members to the first meeting of 2016 when they were entertained and informed about the art of bee keeping by Fred Parker of Horncastle.

The January newsletter was distributed, which gave information of forthcoming events.

Bob Flowerdew’s presentation will take place at Petwood Hotel on April 15.

Tickets are available from Sharon Witherall 01526 353851 and cost £10, including tea/coffee.

A trip is planned to the Harrogate Spring Flower Show on April 21.

The next meeting is in St Peter’s Hall on Friday, February 19, at 7.30pm, when the speaker Bill Smith will talk about “Mr Mole” and unwanted guests.

New members and visitors are always welcome.

Wragby

Variety show - The town hall management committee arranged a further successful show recently, giving an opportunity for people of Wragby and district to take to the stage and display their talent in music, song, dance and comedy.

They were all admirably supported by eight members of the Lindum Accordion Club, who are always happy to take part, sharing their time and delightful music in appreciation of the hospitality offered to them at the town hall when members travel from across the county for their monthly rehearsal.

Margaret Kane, who had arranged the programme, compered the evening and gave a very warm welcome to the audience and, in turn, the performers.

Wragby’s very own poet Vicky James entertained everyone as she recalled getting dressed up for her visit as a member of Wragby WI to go to the Buckingham Palace garden party, which was held to celebrate the centenary of the WI, and later regaled with her verses recalling her 70th birthday, where she got dressed up again, but this time for tea at the Ritz.

Young Charlie Newland Shepherd delighted everyone with her lyrical modern dance, which she performed beautifully, and returned in the second half of the show, this time to showcase her beautiful singing voice.

Her sister Lilly brought the first half to a close with more delightful dancing.

Another popular young star, ventriloquist Harry Turrell, amused the audience, who admired his skill.

Rod Watts, who performed at his first variety show last year, played a selection of well-known tunes on the saxophone to launch the second half of the show and, accompanied by recorded backing music, demonstrated his increased playing proficiency and sang some of the well-known choruses, including The Sunny Side of the Street, which was appreciated on a cold winter’s evening.

Margaret Kane had found a selection of amusing verses to keep the audience happily entertained as the stage was being prepared between the acts.

Janet Box, as narrator, was joined by fellow members of Wragby WI to perform their version of Cinderella.

The cast included Elaine Eccles, Margaret Newland, Pauline Cooper and Linda King, who was the down trodden Cinderella and whose answer to every question was ‘awright’ but she got her prince in the end.

The talented Felicity Turner, who had been singing in Lincoln earlier in the day, kept everyone spellbound during her two performance slots as her voice rang out around the hall.

Felicity obviously loves singing and now entertains professionally for parties and other occasions

After her solo performances, she joined the Lindum Players as they brought the show to an end with a selection of favourite tunes, encouraging the audience to join in, too.
